Philip Goddard

Biography

The Composer at work Philip Goddard is an English composer who writes visionary symphonic, choral and organ works inspired by mountains, wilderness, nature and the spiritual dimension. He is largely self-taught, his work being influenced particularly by the English and Scandinavian music of the first half of the 20th century in addition to the visionary work of the French composers Alain and Messiaen. His interests range far wider, however - from pre-Baroque Church music through to recent visionaries and experimenters such as Iannis Xenakis and Harry Partch, and he has learnt from all these different styles and types of musical content without his individual voice being compromised.

His works include six Symphonies, several large scale works for Chorus, works for Organ, and Chamber music. His more recent works are influenced by Eastern mystical traditions and use the rhythms and repetition of ancient Sanskrit Mantras. His works have been performed in the United States and Europe by such noted performers as Carson Cooman, Organist and Paul Wehage, Saxophonist.

One of the first generation of composers to use the resources of the internet to promote their works, Philip Goddard has produced MIDI realisations of his orchestral works which are widely acclaimed as being some of the most realistic and effective uses of this medium.

Philip Goddard est un compositeur d'origine anglaise qui écrit des oeuvres symphoniques, chorale et pour orgues inspirées par les montagnes, les paysages sauvages, la terre et les aspects mystiques. Autodidacte, son oeuvre est influencé par la musique anglaise et scandinave de la première moitée du 20ième siécle, ainsi que par les oeuvres visionaires des compositeurs français tels que Alain et Messiaen. Ses intérets sont plus diverses, allant de la musique sacrée avant la période dite "baroque" jusqu'à la musique contemporaine de Xenakis et Partch. Malgré ces influences, il a su gardé son style personel qui est très singulaire.

Son œuvre comprend six symphonies, plusiers œuvres importantes pour choeur, œuvres pour orgue et aussi musique de chambre. Ses oeuvre recentes sont colourées par les traditions Asiatique; utilisant les rhythmns et la répétition des mantras Sanskrit. Sa musique a été programmée aux états-Unis et en Europe par des intérprets tel que Carson Cooman, Organiste et Paul Wehage, Saxophoniste.

Un des premières compositeurs de utiliser les ressources de l'intérnet pour la promotion de ses oeuvres, Philip Goddard a produit des réalisations en Midi de ses oeuvres orchestrales qui sont considérées comme parmi les plus réalistes et efficases utilisations de cette médium.
