Biography
img src="http://www.classicalmusicnow.com/images/pascale-lowres.jpg" width="138" height="183"> Pascale JAKUBOWSKI was born in Algeria to a father of Polish origin and a mother who was French. She began her musical career as a clarinetist and singer in several improvisational groups but in recent years has devoted herself exclusively to composition. Since 1979 she has lived and worked in the region of Bordeaux where she has become one of the most remarked composers of the Bordeaux School.
Her works have been presented throughout France and have received French State commissions and regional support. Her first international exposure was at the 1998 Donne In Musica Festival where she represented France. Her Concertino for Soprano Saxophone and Eight Celli was extremely well received and has lead to invitations to Italy, Ireland and Denmark. Her recent compositions include a work for mezzo-soprano and women’s chorus, an new work for Saxophone and Accordion written for Paul Wehage and the Danish Accordion virtuoso Maria Wärme OTTERSTROM and a work for solo saxophone which will be premièred at the Museum of Modern Art in Strasbourg in May 1999.
Pascale Jakubowksi has a strong interest in exploring the music of extra-European cultures, especially African and North African music as well as the Jewish musical tradition of Eastern Europe. In her own words "At the beginning of each new work one asks oneself the question of why? What of my own experience will I be able to share with others? The answer to these questions is made even more difficult to address in that music is a language that goes beyond words. More than thoughts, it is a sensation, an emotion which is born when sounds envelope us...By the necessity for shared experience, on the expression of revolt, on the joy of meeting, I build a work, which is perhaps without worth for those who only believe in commercial value, but which can accompany those who are afraid to open their eyes to the World".
Pascale Jakubowski est née en Novembre 1960 en Algérie, d'un père d'origine Polonaise et d'une mère Française. Après la guerre, elle passe son enfance et son adolescence dans les Landes. A l'âge de sept ans elle entreprend des études de piano puis de clarinette.
A partir de 1979, elle vit à Bordeaux. Elle y développe une recherche musicale faite d'exploration de musiques improvisées (avec Tamia, Louis Sclavis, Benat Achiary...), de musiques du monde (avec Ragunath Panigrahi, Doudou N'Diaye Rose ...). Dès 1980, elle interprète en concert ses propres compositions au piano, à la clarinette basse, à la voix, en France et à l'étranger.
En 1986, elle entreprend des études d'harmonie, de composition électroacoustique et d'analyse musicale au Conservatoire National de Région de Bordeaux (médaille d'or). Elle se consacre alors à la composition contemporaine et reçoit les conseils de François Rossé et Michel Fusté-Lambezat...
Elle bénéficie de plusieurs commandes d'Etat, de festivals, de solistes, de formations de chambre et d'ensembles instrumentaux (Jean-Michel Goury, Paul Wehage, Béatrice Peignois, Maria Wärme-Otterstrom, Pia Kaufmanas, Ensemble Musique-Nouvelle Bordeaux-Aquitaine, Festival International de Fiuggi-Italie notamment). Ses partitions sont jouées en Allemagne, Belgique, Pays Bas, Suisse, Espagne, Etats-Unis, Canada, Italie, Irlande.
Un des caractères de son activité est une pratique conjointe de la composition et de l'expérimentation interdisciplinaire. Elle a ainsi participé à la réalisation d'événements et à des créations avec des artistes (plasticiens, vidéastes, chorégraphes) et des scientifiques (biologiste, physicien, mathématicien).
De 1990 à 1999, elle enseigne au sein de l'Ecole Nationale de Musique de la Dordogne où elle est responsable du département formation musicale et chargée de cours d'analyse musicale auprès des élèves de troisième cycle et des professeurs. Elle est compositrice invitée dans divers stages pour interprètes et différents jurys de diplômes.
